COOL OFF BETWEEN THE LONG SHIFTS
Get significant watersports gear discounts and make the most of the last weeks of summer.
Late summer brings hot days, warm evenings, and a narrow window for getting outside before fall schedules take over. For public servants, that window can be difficult to find. You may be coming off a long shift, preparing for another deployment, working through fire season, or getting ready for the school year.
The water gives you a simple way to reset.
Paddle a quiet lake before work. Fish from a stable kayak on your next day off. Take the family out for an easy afternoon on the water. You do not need an elaborate expedition. You need the right gear, a little planning, and time to breathe.
At LeoAdventures, we help military members, veterans, first responders, Forest Service employees, law enforcement officers, government employees, and educators get outdoors. Our $25 annual membership provides access to significant discounts from outdoor brands, with savings of up to 40% off retail prices. Discount levels and product availability vary by brand.
For late-summer water adventures, three brands deserve a closer look: Spinera, NuCanoe, and Mustang Survival.

TAKE A SPINERA SUP TO THE WATER
Spinera paddleboards make a strong choice when you want a portable way to cool off.
The brand’s inflatable SUPs pack into a carrying backpack. That makes them easier to store in a garage, apartment, station, or vehicle. You can transport one to the lake without needing a trailer or roof rack. For public servants with limited free time, that convenience matters.
Spinera offers several board categories for different kinds of outings:
- All-around boards for casual paddling and general recreation.
- Family SUP options designed to provide more space for shared outings with children or even a dog.
- Light series boards that are easier to carry by bike or public transportation.
- Touring boards for longer paddles and more efficient tracking.
- Yoga and fitness-friendly options for low-impact movement on calm water.
The Spinera SUP collection also includes paddles, pumps, fins, and accessories. Many complete packages include the board, pump, paddle, fin, backpack, and repair kit.
That makes Spinera a practical place to start if you are new to paddleboarding. You can build a simple setup without sourcing every component separately.
Start with calm, protected water. Practice launching, kneeling, standing, turning, and falling safely. Keep your first outing short. The goal is not to prove anything. The goal is to cool down, move your body, and enjoy the time you have.
FISH, EXPLORE, AND UNWIND WITH NUCANOE
If your ideal late-summer escape includes a fishing rod, tackle, and a quiet shoreline, look at NuCanoe.
NuCanoe builds open-deck fishing kayaks with a canoe-style layout. The design gives anglers room to organize equipment, adjust their setup, and spend more time on the water. The boats are made in the USA and sold through local independent retailers.
The NuCanoe UNLIMITED is built as a fishing and hunting platform. NuCanoe describes it as fast, stable, and highly configurable. It has an open deck, extensive rigging options, and space for gear, power, and electronics. The listed maximum capacity is 650 pounds, including passengers and gear, when operated according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
That versatility works well for public servants with different kinds of outdoor interests.
- Fish after a shift: Keep the trip close to home and focus on a familiar lake.
- Explore with a partner: Set up a tandem configuration when your boat and equipment support it.
- Prepare for fall hunting: Use late summer to practice launching, paddling, and organizing your equipment.
- Create a family day: Bring a cooler, a few snacks, and a simple plan for exploring the shoreline.
NuCanoe also offers the Frontier, Classic, and ACCESS lines. Compare models based on your water, transport needs, fishing style, storage space, and total gear load.
Do not rush the purchase. Visit a local dealer when possible. Sit in the boat. Think through how you will carry it, store it, launch it, and use it after a demanding workweek.
WEAR THE RIGHT MUSTANG SURVIVAL PFD
A paddleboard or fishing kayak is only part of your water setup. A properly fitted personal flotation device belongs on every outing.
The U.S. Coast Guard states that a recreational vessel must have one U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD for every person onboard. The Coast Guard also recommends wearing your PFD whenever the vessel is underway. Children under 13 must wear an approved life jacket when a vessel is underway, subject to specific exceptions and state rules.
Mustang Survival offers flotation options for boating, fishing, and paddle sports. The brand’s inflatable PFD collection includes manual and automatic inflatable models. Its Khimera Dual Flotation PFD is designed for paddle sports with a flexible, low-profile construction. Mustang also offers fishing-focused and foam flotation options.
Choose based on:
- Your activity.
- Your swimming ability.
- Your body size and fit.
- The water and weather conditions.
- Whether the PFD is approved for your intended use.
- The manufacturer’s care and maintenance instructions.
A comfortable PFD is more likely to stay on. Try it on before you launch. Adjust every strap. It should fit snugly without restricting your movement. If you use an inflatable model, inspect the cylinder, indicators, inflation mechanism, and re-arming requirements before every trip.
The Coast Guard’s life jacket guidance is a useful resource before you head out.
BUILD A SIMPLE LATE-SUMMER WATER DAY
You do not need to take a week off to benefit from time outside. Build an outing that matches your schedule.
BEFORE YOUR SHIFT
Launch early. Bring a Spinera board to a calm lake and paddle while the air is cooler. Pack water, sunscreen, a hat, and a dry change of clothes. You may be back home before the heat reaches its peak.
AFTER YOUR SHIFT
Keep it local. Choose a familiar access point and take a short sunset paddle. Bring a headlamp if you may return after dark. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
ON YOUR DAY OFF
Plan a longer fishing trip with a NuCanoe. Pack food, extra water, sun protection, basic repair supplies, and a fully charged phone in a waterproof case. Check the forecast and water conditions before leaving.
WITH YOUR FAMILY
Choose a protected area with easy shore access. Keep the pace relaxed. Make sure every person has a properly fitted PFD. A shared afternoon on the water can be enough to make the whole week feel different.
One member, Mike, a firefighter and weekend angler, put it simply: “I do not need a complicated trip. I need a reliable way to get outside when I finally have a day off.”
That is the point. Outdoor recreation should work with your life.
STAY COOL AND STAY READY
Water can lower your body temperature, but it does not eliminate heat risk. Paddlers can still become dehydrated or overheated.
Use this checklist:
- Drink water before launching.
- Bring more water than you think you need.
- Wear sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Apply and reapply sunscreen.
- Plan breaks in the shade.
- Avoid alcohol before and during your outing.
- Check wind, storms, current, and water temperature.
- Carry a whistle and keep communication equipment protected.
- Tell someone your route and return time.
- Follow local boating regulations.
If you see confusion, weakness, nausea, severe headache, or signs of heat stroke, get off the water and seek emergency help immediately.
